To continue with the art history Hunter takes you through, a truly eye-opening tech article is HC's now-disappeared Guitar Amp Evolution , by the eponymous Keenan. As you can see by the link, it's only available as an archived web page on The Wayback Machine, but thank heaven it's one thing HC didn't manage to kill. Keenan provides a wonderful framework for beginning to organize your dictionary of tone, and it's a wonderfully quick and easy read.

As for a middle ground between Hunter and Kuehnel, I'd say it's a wide gap to cross, but there's some excellent resources online.

Takes you from zero too, no prior quals beyond basic algebra required. Although it is a lot to digest, the topics are well-divided, and I am being honest when I say that the book only hits the high-points of each topic.

Within each chapter, I believe one could write an entire other book at least , but the information is not so shallow to be useless. Also, Hunter's writing is easy to follow and he uses guitar-y phrases like This book brushes the surface of just about every topic related to guitar amplification, tone, and all sorts of "voodoo" related to the topic. Also, Hunter's writing is easy to follow and he uses guitar-y phrases like "fat tone," "dig in," and "crack the plaster.
